In 2014, Konstantinos Palaiologos & I, designed the exhibition catalogue for Stegi's exhibition "No Respect", that melded (some) graffiti with street art and was curated by Marilena V. Karra.
We had a large amount of content that we were looking to both unify and make easily accessible by readers.
We saw the coherent and accessible solution we were looking for, in creating three separate volumes respectively, for essays, exhibition works and streetworks, that would come together in the same, unique nest.
The three volumes and their home, have multiple references in painting techniques, textures and side effects, found in "new york graffiti".
For instance:
• The way the covers of the three volumes are dividing the exhibition title, is a direct reference to the way subway cars divide graffiti pieces that cover multiple subway cars or the whole train
• By silkscreen printing a hand-pulled, six colour gradient on the pvc (white van surface) nest, we managed to achieve five hundred unique prints, without any identical ones. Something reminiscent of graffiti writers who often do the same piece with the same colours all over, but no two pieces are ever really the same, therefore interpreting the exhibition title very much like a tag or crew name.
By skipping anything that could create a "too serious" look and feel, we managed to achieve a laid back, yet minimal print that due to the way it embeds the above and much more into the design, it has elements of parody and therefore —some— humour, a form of self-sarcasm; something vital considering the nature of the exhibition title, making it a whole lot more relatable and fun, for both outsider and insider viewers.
